Local Strategic Partnership launches SAVE Campaign

8th July 2008

The Festival of Life saw the launch of the SAVE (St Albans Values Energy) campaign led by the St Albans Local Strategic Partnership.

The inside of the newly refurbished Town Hall was packed with fascinating displays and workshops from the SAVE road show showing how individuals can all do their part in helping the environment.

The SAVE Campaign team were on hand to help residents measure their individual carbon footprint and recommended practical steps on how to reduce their impact on the environment.

There was an opportunity for residents to get to know some of the organisations working alongside the council in reducing the district's carbon footprint by 3% year on year. People from Whizzgo were on hand to offer advice on how to use emission friendly cars on a pay-as-you-go basis, Working Herts provided information on energy saving insulation schemes, University Of Herts gave hints and tips on how best to use public transport and St Albans Chamber of Commerce were working out residents' individual carbon foot print.

St Albans Friends of the Earth and Hertfordshire Alternative Technology Society gave advice on how to get involved in community action land and make an impact on global warming.

Cllr Robert Donald, Chair of the LSP commented, "The Local Strategic Partnership has set a very ambitious target to reduce CO2 emissions in our district by 3% every year to hit 60% by 2025. Achieving this will rely on all of us doing what we can to help. This SAVE St Albans Festival energy event gave practical examples of ways we can all save energy, reduce CO2 and sustain our environment, by relatively small lifestyle changes in our travel arrangements, at home and at work. We will be taking this message out around the district in the coming months in our SAVE roadshow. So do look out for this at a local supermarket, village hall or school during the next year and get a copy of the SAVE "3 ways to cut your carbon footprint" brochure from the district council to start you off. The more we each do, the more our 3% annual target becomes achievable."

This was the first of 12 road shows planned throughout the year, for more information of upcoming events or to learn more about reducing your carbon footprint go to the SAVE website www.bepartofthesolution.org.uk or contact the Sustainability Team on 01727 819466.
