Computer Friendly
Free basic IT training facilities for adults

7 May, 2004

Free and friendly computer training for adults is now available at libraries throughout the district thanks to the St Albans and District Local Strategic Partnership.

Computer Friendly offers free basic introductory computer training in public locations across the St Albans City and District. Aiming to meet the needs of people of all ages and abilities with IT and Internet training, Computer Friendly is the successor to the popular Café Net project that closed earlier in the year.

"This basic computer skills training is available to anyone over the age of 18 living in our district and very suitable for older people, our Silver Surfers. The training doesn't cost the trainee anything except their time and commitment," says Melvyn Teare, LSP theme leader for learning, leisure and the arts.
Computer Friendly is partnering with the Library Service and Oakland's College to bring the new service into the community. The Library Service is hosting some of the basic courses already being delivered by Computer Friendly volunteers: Fleetville Library has a Computer Friendly training suite while Marshalswick, Harpenden and the Central Library offer courses. Secondary schools St Albans Girls School and St George's in Harpenden also run evening courses. Non-accredited courses are offered by volunteer trainers and tutors from partner agencies in other community locations.

"This will enable Computer Friendly to offer first step training support, with the opportunity to progress to accredited training as people's confidence increases," says Melvyn. The Computer Friendly partners include: Oaklands College; Herts County Council Library Service; St Albans District Café Net Charity; the Primary Care Trust; Adult care Services; Economic and Community Development Unit; Learning and Skills Council and St Albans City and District Council.

For information on the courses contact Computer Friendly Manager, Bill Langley on 01727 774009 or contact the relevant public library - Harpenden; St Albans Central Library; Fleetville on 01438 737333.
